Unlike most garden furniture, deck chairs are portable, so can easily be moved around your garden as much as you like. In fact, they’re so versatile, you can even take them to the park or the beach, or on camping trips, for a little extra comfort.

Lightweight and foldable, they’re easy to store away over winter or when not in use, taking up far less space than most other garden seating. They come in a range of colours and patterns, to suit every style, and because they’re such a simple design – just material stretched over a wooden frame – they tend to be one of the cheapest seating options too.

So check out our list of the best deck chairs on the market, and add some style to your garden with these comfortable and versatile family favourites.

Can you leave a deck chair outside?

The simple answer is yes – leaving deck chairs outside is usually okay, especially over the summer. But harsh winters or other extreme weather can damage them, so consider storing your deck chairs indoors when not in use, to protect them from the elements.

If you’re going to keep your deck chairs outside for substantial lengths of time, make sure they’re made from robust materials. Most deck chair frames are wooden. Hardwoods such as teak offer durability in most weather conditions. Wood does usually need some upkeep though, such as oiling or staining, to protect it from moisture and UV rays – always follow the retailer’s recommendations to keep your deck chairs in good condition. Metal or plastic frames are also available, but metal can be damaged by rust, and plastic may be too brittle for constant use.

Whatever the frame is made from, regular cleaning and maintenance can help extend its life, as accumulated dust, dirt and debris can lead to deterioration. Simply wash the frame with soap and water occasionally, avoiding abrasive cleaners that might damage the surface.

The fabric seat sling is the most vulnerable part when left outside. So look for slings that can be removed when not in use or if rain is forecast, and that can be easily washed if they get dirty. Slings are usually weather resistant, but this doesn’t mean weatherproof. It’s okay if you forget to bring them in once or twice but to help them last longer, keep them inside when not in use.
