Many of us like a bit of a punch to our food, from hot sauce drizzled over chicken to curries full of fresh chilli. Wasabi is another popular choice for adding a spicy kick to our meals. It is made from the rhizome of the wasabi plant which is native to Japan and is frequently paired with sushi.


The Wasabi Company is the only UK grower of fresh English wasabi. They use disused Victorian watercress beds in Dorset and Hampshire to mimic the streams on Japanese mountain sides, where the plants naturally grow. The plants take two years to mature before the rhizome is ready to harvest and grate for that quintessential Japanese ingredient – fresh, green, sinus-burning, eye-watering wasabi paste.

The Wasabi Company also sell a range of exotic plants such as wasabi, yuzu, Buddha’s hand and finger lime trees. They produce their own range of condiments flavoured with wasabi and other Japanese ingredients, including wasabi mayonnaise and wasabi mustard. Find out more at
