Seven flowers to pick in June

Discover which flowers you can pick from your garden in June, including roses, sweet peas and peonies.

Many gardens are at their peak in June, filled with colour and scent. There are lots of beautiful flowers that you can pick and bring into the house to enjoy, whether you have your own dedicated cutting patch or are raiding your borders.

Discover 10 cut flowers to grow from seed.

Here are seven beautiful flowers to pick in June - including annuals such as sweet peas, perennials such as peonies and shrubs such as roses.

Sweet peas

Picking sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) regularly means that you will not only have lots of pretty posies for the house, but it will also encourage more flowers. For the best blooms, remove the curly tendrils as they grow.

Lilies, such as 'Maldano', shown here, are at their flamboyant best in June. Don't forget that lilies are toxic to cats.

Sumptuous peonies make wonderful cut flowers, especially the doubles, such as this beautiful Paeonia 'Pink Hawaiian Coral'.

Alstroemerias (Peruvian lilies) such as Alstroemeria 'Cahors' (Planet Series) make exceptionally long-lasting cut flowers and come in a range of colours.

Sweet William

Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus) are perennials, usually grown as biennials, that look great in a cottage garden border. They make exceptionally long-lasting cut flowers.

Sweet rocket

Sweet rocket (such as Hesperis matronalis var. alba) looks wonderful in a cottage- or meadow-style border and makes an excellent cut flower. Grow it from seed for flowers the following year.

Roses, of course, make wonderful cut flowers, and come in a terrific range of types and colours. 'Lynda Bellingham', shown here, has a light, spicy fragrance.
