How to plant up an alpine trough

Discover how to plant up an alpine trough in autumn, with the help of Monty Don's video guide.

Do it:

Sep, Oct

Autumn is a good time to plant alpines, and Monty Don shows you how in this short video guide from Gardeners' World. Watch as he adds to his stone trough, planting spoon-leaved stonecrop (Sedum spathulifolium 'Cape Blanco'), with rosettes of powdery-grey leaves, a mini-tree-like Crassula sarcocaulis, and bulbs of Fritillaria michailovskyi for tiny purple bellflowers in early summer. He also gives tips on the growing conditions these gem-like plants need to thrive.
