One variety (the back half) of my overwintered onions have keeled over. Does this mean they will be ready soon? I presume it's been brought about by the hot weather. I was going to take up half as spring onions to make room for my beans but my beans may have to be patient...

They are not really ready to be harvested until the foliage has dried up, but you can take onions for the kitchen as and when you need them. Let the foliage keel over naturally - don't help it!
Interesting, I was told they were ready by someone else so pulled the ones that had keeled over naturally, I'll leave the rest til they are both keeled over and brown. Will the ones I've pulled be ok? They're in a cardboard box, foliage slowly going brown, and will be eaten over the next few eeks.
When they are ready to be pulled the roots will let go too.
