Hi, I purchased this lovely indoor plant from Tesco in December 2012. It is almost one year old now, and has had a very happy life in my sun facing window sill. It did very well this summer with the hot weather we had, and it grew fantastically well.
I have noticed that recently, half of the plan seems to have gone brown and quite a few branches are dead. I have noticed at the ends of the buds on each branch. Is this normal and if not, what can I do to help my plant?
I believe these were sold last year as "Christmas decorations" but are not intended to be kept indoor longterm - it's a variety of spruce (traditional Christmas tree) and needs to be kept outside, perhaps bringing indoors for a week or so over the Christmas period.
It sounds as if it's been scorched by the sun. If you want to try to save it I'd pot it on into a slightly larger pot, using John Innes No 2 loam-based compost with some added grit.
Then I'd harden it off (explained here) http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=386 to get it used to the outside conditions, and keep it in a sheltered corner outside for 12 months, before bringing it indoors in 13 months' time for Christmas 2014 for a few days only.
I would put it out doors where it really wants to be as its hates central heating.as dove says, but hey you done well to keep it going.
