I run a children's home and have a large area of seriously overgrown weeds that I'd like to clear to (eventually) make into a football pitch.
What would be the easiest and cheapest way of doing this??
I should probably add that I live in Thailand in case that changes things!
Thanks for any advice you can give!
Cut everything down on the area you want, and then mow it . Regular mowing will kill most weeds. It wont be wembley perfect but ok for a kick around with a ball.
Any idea what sort of weeds you have? - ie just soft green ones or really tough woody ones? Are any of them likely to be poisonous? (I have no idea what sort of things grow as weeds in Thailand). If yes to the first (and no to both of the others) then FB's suggestion would work.
If, however, you have big woody stems and / or toxic plants you will need to clear these to avoid injuries - either mechanically (digging!) and / or with chemicals.
A picture or two might help us point you in the right direction.
i live in thailand and i regularly cut back with a poerfull strimmer type tool that is popular here, but there is a powerful prickly weed here that grows outwards along the ground, that is taking over. pulling it out works but this would take weeks. do you think rotavating might help? My garden is 1600sq.m.
i can't seem to upload an image i'm afraid.
i managed to upload an image of the offending weed in my garden (hopefully)
Totavating live weeds just makes so many more root cuttings that proliferate the problem. You really need to apply a systemic weedkiller that kills them down to their roots before doing any digging or rotavating.
To make it easier, you can strim off the main plant growth then wait a week or so for new foliage to appear and spray that with a glyphosate based weedkiller. It will work very well on healthy new growth but you may need two or three applications for persistent weeds. It takes 2 weeks to work and you need 6 hours of dry weather after application for it to be absorbed and have a chance to be effective.
