I have been looking at dolly tubs for months. Imagine my excitement when one popped up on a 'free' page on Facebook.
i pleaded for it and managed to get it. Off I trooped to collect and now I'm throwing it open to us all..... what shall I put on it next year. Veg, plants, shrubs, tree?
so let's hear those ideas and I will hopefully post pics next year when 'project dolly' is underway.
What's a Dolly Tub Red Dahlia?
Oh my sorry I thought most people would know. It's a tin barrel type tub that people would wash in 'in the old days' with a wooden ponch type thingy. I sound like I know what I'm talking about but at 32 I have only ever really seen pictures. They are selling on eBay for about 30-80 pounds. I will try and attach a picture but google dolly tub and you will see how lovely they are.
a real bargain to get one for free!!!
I have seen them with trees and bold trailing stuff downwards
Did wonder if it was something to do with washing! Never seen one used for planting, good idea
Well the one I collected has drainage holes in so I thought I would add it to the garden collection. My boyfriend fancies a tree dahlia - I have never seen one!!
I'm a bit obsessed with standards at the mo, so I wold put in some type of standard with lots of lovely frilly trailers underneath it. Tumbelina petunias maybe. I have a full whisky barrel that I couldn't bear to half, so I have a large shallow planter on top, with a small water feature in the bowl, planted around with surfinias this yr, but the tumbelinas looked better last yr. Will look for a pic of this yrs, but I know I have none from last yr as computer died with all my pics. (and who hadn't backed them up, daft cow?)
Needs a specimen of some type, then you coild see plant and tub in all their glory in the 'bald' months, underplanted with shortish bulbs for spring, then the traily things in summer. Trailing violas might look nice in late winter/spring.
I had never seen or heard of a tree dahlia before (have a tree peony, but have not had a flower yet in 3 yrs!), so I looked it up. Only glanced at these links so far, but thought you might like.
Thanktou will take a look...
i found my dolly tub a few years back .fly tipped
I would be pulling straight over to snaffle that. Some people just see things as waste yet I would love a matching pair.
gardenjeannie I have looked at the tree dahlia and boy they are big, think maybe not!!
I'm new to Facebook - whats a free page?
There was one in the garage of the house we bought, I planted a wldflower mix in it this year and an old metal dustbin, also in the garage, has been painted black and has a fatsia japonica growing in it.
I hate waste!!
Ranunculus - some people in this area have set up pages where people can give stuff away for free, like freecycle! It's fab, I always keep my eyes open for garden items!!!
i would like a metal bath for my salad items, I'm keeping my eyes open!
What a blast from the past RD, I remember we had a couple of 'mangles' now, if I had a lagre garden me thinks they would look good as features with plants growing over them.
I use old bins for composting muck and making plant feed in, my friends children, all under 7, think, they are from the 'Olden Days' before recycling bins doesn't that just make one feel old and I've along ways to go before I'm 27.
RD - thanks. How do you access these pages? Could I set up this sort of thing in my area too?
Olden days hey, that's scary!!!! Bins!!!
Ranunculus I just searched for pages/groups like 100% free Lincoln. Gifters and givers. What area are you based and I will search for you too.
RD - I'm based on the London/Essex border.
I will have a look for you. Have you tried freecycle. also I would put a post on Facebook asking your friends they may have seen some.
