BBC Gardeners World Magazinehttps://www.gardenersworld.com2025-04-24T09:10:45.000Zhourly12000-01-01T12:00+00:00The best garden waste bags in 2025https://www.gardenersworld.com/product-guides/storage/best-garden-waste-bags/2025-04-24T09:10:37.000ZChoosing the best garden waste bag might not be at the top of your list of gardening priorities but when you're replacing an old, worn-out bag there are various points to consider.
Material, capacity, shape and additional features such as handles and internal supports can all contribute to how easy the garden waste bag is to fill and empty, as well as how long it lasts.
The most common materials used include polypropylene fabric and canvas, although more environmentally-friendly options such as waterproofed paper and jute are becoming more common. Polypropylene fabric is often used for heavy-duty garden waste bags because it's tear-resistant, lightweight and relatively cheap.
The size of bag you choose will largely depend on what gardening tasks you intend to carry out and the corresponding waste these will create. If its main purpose is to hold waste from everyday tasks such as weeding or clearing leaves, a smaller capacity such as 75 litres should suffice. A capacity of 125 litres and above should be considered for bigger jobs.
Below, we explain the most popular types of garden waste bags and share a suggested list of some of the best garden waste bags to choose from.

Types of garden waste bags
Garden waste bags can vary in shape, size and material. The three most common shapes are cylinder, square and a traditional sack shape. However, dustpan-style bags that are flat on one side to aid with sweeping up leaves are also an option.
For those that are trying to be more eco-conscious, there are a number of bags now on sale that are biodegradable or compostable and can make a good alternative to plastic garden waste bags.
Pop-up garden waste bags
One of the main benefits to pop-up garden waste bags is that they can be folded down and stored flat. This makes them a great option for anyone with limited space in their shed or garage.
Most will also have internal support in the form of a loop or spring mechanism that should ensure the bags keep their shape and are easy to fill.
Dustpan garden waste bags
Dustpan-style garden waste bags come in a semi-circle shape that allows them to lie flat on the ground lengthways. This style is particularly useful for gathering swept leaves and other debris on the ground.
Handles are usually found along the rounded side of the garden waste bags to make them easy to pick up and empty once you're done clearing the leaves.
Compostable garden waste bags
Though most garden waste bags are made from polypropylene fabric, compostable and biodegradable options have become more common.
Made from waterproofed paper or jute, these garden waste bags are best suited to lighter or everyday gardening work. The size can vary but they typically have a small to medium capacity.
What should you compost?
Once you’ve collected your garden waste, what should you do with it? Composting is a great way to turn unwanted waste into compost that you can use back in the garden. The best way to create compost is with a mix of ingredients. Combine soft, leafy material, grass clippings and kitchen peelings (green waste) with chopped up woody matter, cardboard and shredded paper (brown waste) in a ratio of around 50:50 green to brown.
This will maintain both moisture and aeration in the heap or bin, both of which are required for good decomposition. Fruit and vegetable peel, and produce that is beyond use, are valuable additions to compost, but don't add meat or fish (cooked or raw) to a standard compost bin or heap as it will be become rancid, resulting in harmful bacteria and attract rats.

How to cover outdoor furniture
The first step in protecting your outdoor furniture is having a high-quality cover for it. Once you have invested in this, your favourite seating and dining sets can stay in top-notch condition, whatever the season and weather. It's pretty straightforward when it comes to covering your furniture – here are some general tips:
- Measure accurately: For the perfect fit, make sure you measure your outdoor furniture before choosing your cover. You want it to be a snug fit to ensure maximum protection.
- Choose quality materials: Opt for covers made from durable, hardwearing materials that are weatherproof against both rainy and sunny conditions. Materials such as polyester and vinyl are good options to help extend the life of your furniture.
- Secure tightly: Once you have placed the cover over your furniture, make sure you fasten it securely. Many covers have built-in fasteners or drawstrings - these will ensure the covers are kept in place during harsh weather and will also prevent any disturbance by wildlife.
When to cover outdoor furniture
To ensure your garden furniture remains in optimum condition all year round, it’s important protect it from the elements by covering it up when not in use. Here are some tips on when exactly to cover your table and chair sets and swing seats:
- Cover at night: Make sure your garden furniture is covered overnight. As the sun sets and temperatures drop, it’s essential to shield your furniture from dew, moisture and cooler air during the night.
- Cover in bad weather conditions: Heavy winds and rainfall can cause damage to exposed furniture - whether it’s raining, snowing or stormy, make sure your outdoor furniture is covered securely.
- Cover in sunny conditions: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to furniture becoming damaged and faded, so cover it in peak daylight hours to protect against UV rays.
- Cover when not in use: Make sure to keep your furniture protected when not in use by shielding it with a good-quality cover, particularly during the winter months and when you are away on holiday.

]]>The best water butts in 2025https://www.gardenersworld.com/product-guides/storage/best-water-butts/2025-02-19T12:07:08.000ZTurning wet weather into a windfall, water butts are a great way to conserve water while keeping your garden well-maintained and healthy. Coming in a wide range of materials and sizes, a water butt will help you harvest rainwater, and give your garden some extra drought-resistance. Some of the benefits of having a water butt include:
- Using rainwater instead of mains water for your watering needs is hugely beneficial for your garden, as well as for the environment.
- Whilst all plants will benefit from being watered with rainwater, it's particularly beneficial to ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons, camelias and azaleas.
- Tap water contains calcium, which can leave white marks on leaves. Whilst not harmful to the plant, it can be unsightly.
- In a hot spell and during hosepipe bans, a personal supply of water comes in handy.
- A water butt will also save your money if using a water metre.
In this guide, we’ll give advice on the types of water butts available, standout water butts on the market, and how to choose the best water butt for you.

How to choose the best water butt
There are three main considerations when it comes to choosing the best water butt for your garden: size, material and budget.
The size of your garden will influence the size and water capacity you'll need. If space is limited, consider a smaller water butt with a capacity of under 200 litres. Those with small gardens may also benefit from having a water butt that mounts on the wall to reduce how much patio space it takes up. For a large garden, a capacity of 200 litres or more is suitable. In most cases, you'll also need to buy a stand, so you can fit a watering can under the tap to fill it, a hose, and a diverter kit, to connect it to your down pipe.
When it comes to materials, water butts are typically made from plastic or steel. Both are extremely durable but plastic water butts are often cheaper, with recycled plastic water butts being an environmentally-friendly option.
Types of water butts
Most water butts are supplied with a stand and can be placed on the ground in the corner of the garden. However, some water butts can be mounted on an external wall, a good option for smaller gardens where ground space is precious. You can also run guttering from a shed roof into a water butt as an efficient way to harvest rainwater – if you don't have one in your garden, you might find our comprehensive guide to the best garden sheds useful.
- Buy a downpipe rain trap from Garden Trading, Water Butts Direct and Amazon.
Mounted Water Butts
Perfect for gardens with minimal free floorspace, mounted water butts, like the Pure Raindrop Water Butt, are lightweight and designed to sit on external walls in the garden. This type provides more flexibility regarding the height of the tap because you have full control over where, and how high, it's fixed to the wall.
Plastic Water Butts
Plastic is the most common water butt material, with a number of recycled plastic options available. Cheaper than their steel counterparts, plastic water butts come in both the mounted style or the traditional barrel with a stand such as the Cloudburst Water Butt.
Steel Water Butts
Steel water butts are durable and long-lasting. Typically heavier and more expensive than plastic, these water butts are designed to stand on the ground. Traditional barrel water butts also vary a lot more in capacity.
You can also run guttering from a shed roof into a water butt as an efficient way to harvest rainwater – if you don't have one in your garden, you might find our comprehensive guide to the best garden sheds useful.

]]>The best garden sheds for 2025 and how to choose onehttps://www.gardenersworld.com/product-guides/storage/best-garden-sheds/2025-02-10T15:29:03.000ZSheds are an invaluable addition to any garden, providing storage, protection and even a space to relax. However, it’s worth making sure you match the right shed to your garden and your gardening needs. If you simply want a low-maintenance, durable garden space for storage, a metal shed may be all you need, but depending on the tools and other kit you have you might need a large apex shed, or just a garden chest.
We’ve rounded up a selection of a range of different types of shed, all made from either wood or metal. In the interest of reducing plastic usage in the garden, we haven't recommended any plastic sheds here, although they are widely available. Please note, the measurements featured below are a guide and list the widest, highest or deepest measurements of each shed's dimensions. Further details such as exact door widths and heights at different points of the roof can be found on the sellers’ websites.

How to choose your shed
Follow our guide to help you choose the right shed for you and your garden:
What size shed should you choose?
Apart from considering what you want to use your shed for, another important factor is how much space you have in your garden for a shed. To work this out, measure and mark out the space, making sure you allow room for the door to open and access in and out and make note of overhanging trees or other obstacles that might affect how tall the shed can be. Remember that shed dimensions refer to exterior measurements, so the interior footprint will be slightly less. Siting your shed close to a building, hedge or wall or fence will give it some protection from the elements and help it to last longer
Which is the best shape for a roof?
There are two main shapes of shed roof to choose from. How you plan to use the shed and how much space you have available will determine which shape is right for you.
- Apex: This is the traditional triangle-shaped roof, with two sloping sides meeting in a peak in the middle. Inside, the centre of the shed offers the most headroom, and space is lower at either side. With a reverse apex shed, the two sloping sides meet in the middle down the entire length.
- Pent: A pent roof slopes in just one direction. Usually the roof is higher at the front and slopes away to the back of the shed. Internally, the most headroom is at the front of the shed where the door is. Conversely, a reverse pent has the highest point at the back. Smaller and lean-to sheds often have pent roofs that slope to one side.
Which material should you choose?
Sheds can be made from wood, plastic or metal and each material has its own benefits and uses:
- Wood: The traditional material for a garden shed, wood is a popular choice with the most variety in style and shape available. It's a natural material, so wooden sheds blend into their surroundings well and are reasonably durable. While wood may warp over time, there are a variety of treatments to help you maintain your garden shed.
The roof is usually covered in felt, but some have tile-effect shingles. Wooden sheds are clad in a number of different styles:
- Overlap: This type of cladding consists of individual strips of wood overlapped and nailed together. The angle of the panels lets rainwater drain away and gives the wood the space to expand and shrink with the weather. Overlap cladding can be a little draughty, so it’s not ideal if you’re planning on spending lots of time working inside. For storage alone, however, it's a simple and effective choice.
- Tongue and Groove: The cladding interlocks together to keep water and drafts out, so these sheds are sturdy with a neater, sleeker appearance.
- Shiplap: Essentially an advanced version of tongue and groove cladding, shiplap has a scalloped appearance. It has all the benefits of tongue and groove plus the scalloping allows rain water to run off the shed more effectively.
- Metal: Metal sheds tend to be the most secure, so they're a good option if you need to store valuable items. They’re also weatherproof and long lasting.
- Plastic: Plastic sheds won't rot, they require almost no maintenance, and they tend to be lightweight, making them easy to assemble. However, non-recycled plastic isn’t a sustainable material.
Do you need to lay foundations for a garden shed?
Sheds often come with flooring included or with the option to add it as an extra, unless stated otherwise. If you don't already have a solid base, such as concrete or paving slabs, you will need to lay one or you can buy a purpose-made shed base.
Do you need planning permission for a shed?
Although in most cases you wont need planning permission from your local authority to put up a shed, particularly if its a small to medium size, always check before you buy. However, there are exceptions when you should seek planning permission, including: If the shed is 4m or higher, is bigger than half the total area of your property, is in front of your house or you plan to use the shed for something other then domestic purposes.
Remember to inform your neighbours if you plan to install a shed on a boundary or need access to their garden for construction.
How to secure your garden shed
When it comes to security, the sturdier your shed the better. However, as sheds can be a target for thieves, you may want to consider additional ideas to make it more burglar-proof.
- The roof can be a weak spot so if it’s possible, fix it to the main shed frame with bolts.
- Ensure doors are as solid as possible, and add a heavy duty locking system as well as a door bar to prevent them from being pushed inwards. When it comes to hinges, it’s sensible to replace screws with through-bolts.
- It’s worth locking up expensive tools and equipment within the shed, and installing an alarm and security lights, too.
- As a further precaution, check if your shed and its contents are covered by your home insurance policy.
In a hurry? Here are useful quick links to the essentials:
- Padlocks - buy from B&Q and Garden Buildings Direct
- Security lights - buy from Amazon, Argos and My Tool Shed

However, trusted, specialist retailers, both brick-and-mortar and online, offer a wider choice and often have deals. How long does grass seed last in a box?
On average, the lifespan of most seeds, if stored in optimal conditions, can be between three and five years. To ensure its longevity, ensure you store the seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, ideally in a specially designed seed box. Look for boxes made from UV-resistant materials and airtight seals and ventilation to protect from moisture, temperature changes and pests.

How to paint a shed
There are a couple of important things to consider when it comes to painting your shed. Follow these steps to get your shed looking smart and well protected against the elements.
- Preparation: Making sure your shed is prepped and ready for painting is key. Ensure the surface has been thoroughly cleaned, removing any dirt, mildew or loose paint. Using a pressure washer for this is helpful, but you will need to make sure that the shed is completely dry before starting to paint. Also check for any rot or damage and make the necessary repairs.
- Pick the right paint: When choosing your paint, make sure to look for high-quality formulas and ones specifically designed to withstand all outdoor conditions.
- Priming: If your shed is unpainted or is made from fresh wood, apply a primer first. This will make the painting process more effective.
- Painting: Ensure that any primer has fully dried. Depending on the size of your shed, you may prefer to use a brush or roller. Paint in top-to-bottom strokes, applying thin and even coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before moving on to the next.
What colour should I paint my shed?
Your choice of colour will make a big difference to how the shed looks in your garden. If you want your shed to blend in then greens and browns are good options. If you’re looking to make your shed stand out, look for blues, yellows or even reds to contrast with the green of your lawn or plants’ leaves. There are plenty of different colours on the market, so there is something for every style and preference.

]]>Useful bin store ideashttps://www.gardenersworld.com/product-guides/storage/bin-store-ideas/2022-09-21T12:35:16.000ZWhile wheelie bins may be extremely practical and necessary, they can sometimes be an eyesore when it comes to your outdoor space.
Investing in a bin store will not only be more aesthetically pleasing but may also function as a deterrent to theft, keep animals such as foxes away from the rubbish and stop bins toppling in bad weather.
We have collated a range of bin storage ideas to show what's available at different price points and help you decide what size, materials and features you prefer.
Bin stores are most commonly built from FSC timber, stainless steel or plastic, though we would recommend the first two for durability. And while most have both lids and doors for easy access to your bins, more expensive models can be fitted with locking systems for added security, or dedicated shelving for recycling bins.
