This will be my first allotment winter and want to put winter onions and garlic in, but I don't know where to get them from. I know you can get them on sites like T&M but I always find them to e quite expensive so thought I'd ask you guys where you buy yours? I don't want hundreds of them. They'll be sharing a 1.2m x 2.4 bed with garlic Thanks

Our allotment do a bulk order of onion sets, ask someone if they do that
I usually grow Japanese 'Senshyu' over wintering onions with a 90% success rate. Poundstretcher sell them in smaller bags. Nice onion that keeps well.
I grew overwintering garlic for the first time and they were a disaster. They suffered from rust, as did the 'Ishikura and 'Shimonita' bunching onions planted nearby. The 'Senshyu' onions, and 'Lilia' spring onion planted later on in the year on a plot further away, had no rust whatsoever.
October is about the best time to plant garlic.
Most onions are started off in the spring, as soon as the soil starts to warm up.
Meant to add: garden centres and seed stores will sell garlic, but we've had good results from ordinary kitchen garlic from a local greengrocer. Look out for Isle of Wight varieties, or possibly French, rather than(say) Chinese, which are less likely to do well in our climate.
Onion sets are available from garden centres etc from early spring. Small local traders (hardware/garden stores) often sell them loose so you can buy exactly the number you want, but sometimes you have to buy by the bag.
Thank you all very much, advice noted
A good handful is usually enough. Start them off in modules. If they have roots when you plant them out the birds won't pull them out.
