Why has my lupin changed colour?

Last year I bought a deep red lupin that looked like this

Now it looks like this

Can anybody tell me why? 

I'm a bit cheesed off!  image

    I colud understand that Dave if it was from seed but this is a well established plant. Surely it shouldn't happen in one season.

    Also I didn't let it set seed.

    My purple one stayed purple image

    My pink one stayed pink image

    My lemon /yellow one stayed lemon/yellow image

    And my red one went puce. Brilliant! Could be worse could be purple too!

    Oh well! I'll just move it when it dies down and put something else there! image Thanks all.

    I had a coppery coloured one many years ago and I think it had a hundred and thirty odd spikes eventually! It was huge and  some of them towards the end were tiny....but still. I was shocked. I didn't see Dave's comment.

    Just as an add, the red one I had last year is just showing this evening. It's now pink!

    According to West Country Nurseries who are major lupin breeders, reversion does not occur in lupins.

    It is a question they get asked a lot, and in their experience, it is due to self seeding, close to the original plant.

    I've been having a read and apparently they don't revert! Really? Coulda fooled me. image

    It hasn't gone true purple like the wild ones but it's definitely unred.

    Could it be something to do with the level of soil acidity as with the colour of hydrangeas ?
