Horsetail weed

I'm afraid there is no easy solution. Where there `are no other plants you can spray with a glyphosate-based weedkiller such as Roundup, crushing the weed first so that the weedkiller penetrates its waxy surface.

This won't eradicate it, but it'll decrease it - you will need to spray a number of times.

I have the same problem, have sprayed them twice with some success, but roots underground send up more fresh tails...nightmare. If I can I dig down and get as much root as poss. but if other plants are about u can't really do this. Everyone including AT reckons that if you keep removing them they will be beaten- eventually they give up. go round the garden with a tub and just keep pulling them out...do not put on your compost...put in green council bin or burn...good luck...you are not alone.

Thankyou for your suggestions. I have tried Roundup but little success. Such a shame sodium chlorate was banned. Guess it's just rubber gloves and a kneeling pad!!

roundup ultra 3000,will kill it,but this is expensive at £40.00 a bottle but well worth it.

I have inherited a garden full of it, but have already found that digging it out with a trowel, getting as much root as possible, and pouncing on any new shoots as soon as they appear is already reducing the prevalence of it. Getting it when it's at the really small shoot stage seems to be the key

ultra 3000 will kill it,but it will take about 4 weeks for the weed to die.

I killed a garden full of it, the size of my garden is 100 foot long by 30 foot wide and it is now clear, but the cost was a bottle and a half (£60.00).

Best to use it on hot days

You can also try adding a drop of soap to it, which helps it to stick.
