when is the best time to prune a rather large mock orange.  We pruned it in early summer and it flowered very well, but know it has gone mad with growth.


It will flower next june on the new wood, and then prune it hard. take out a third of the old wood, down to the base.

Agree with that.  It will have loads of flowers next June.  However, apart from removing some of the very old wood after flowering you cut off all the flowered stems back to new shoots.
