slugs

I wonder if anyone has same problem as me.. 2yrs ago got rid of pond with frogs in.. bad move.. did`nt realise what a wonderful job they do... we must over the last 6wks killed over 200 slugs..very big orange ones too... lost count with snails.. I would have no flowers or veg if we did`nt go out most nights with our torch.... dwarf runners in gr/hse are fine but outside all but one have vanished...we do have a home made water feature full of big stones.. to my amazement there is a frog living in it so am now thinking of doing a small sunken large pot with just rain water in & hopefully get more frogs back into the garden..what plants do well at keeping it clear in stagnant water...

The reduction in your frogs alone is not responsible for the increase in the slug population. Everyone has had far more slugs this year, simply because of the wet weather, which has encouraged them.

If you've got a frog which is happy with your water feature, then other frogs would be too. But it's always useful to have plenty of water sources. It's not absolutely necessary to have a plant in it, though any frogs and tadpoles would certainly appreciate it. If you want something, try a bunch of Elodea (available from garden centres, and from Amazon, 10 bunches for £4).

thanks for advice...last night we only got 34 slugs.. ha haa..they must love our garden as each side of us they only have grass..so we are an oasis....today we are putting in another small water area in the shade so less algae... I do love water..have taken note of plant you recommend..

cant agree more we have wild life pond with frogs and no problem with slugs.my wife imports them from her sisters garden to feed our frogs they love them,and we dont have problems our hostas are fantastic.
