Why do cuttings have to be inserted into compost at the edge of the pot?  Does this increase the chance of success, if so, how?

I have had mixed success by planting in centre of pot!

Hmmm!  I think there are two reasons......one compost is bit drier there so less chance  for it to rot.  Also I think roots "feel" swamped in centre of pots; they like to "feel" the edge of the pot.  On a practical level there is more space around the edge of the pot ...a third reason

I certainly have greater success with cuttings around the edge....sometimes insert odd one in the middle but it rarely takes
