We erected a 56 ft x 21ft ( sorry about the old school measurements, but they come in multiples of 8ft lenghts and 3ft widths ) tunnel last November . It has netting up to the first metre .This is our cool tunnel. We've just finished a totally polythene tunnel 48 ft x 21ft. It's our hot tunnel.
This morning I'm starting to build raised beds so I can " hit the ground running " next spring.
Mike I know tunnels aren't everyone's cuppa, but we had 92mph winds here last year which destroyed my glasshouse, the only damage to the tunnel was from flying glass.
Didn't known there is cool and hot tunnels , need to do lots of research
Hostafan1 , what's the difference in what you grow in them?
Mike I have no problem with Poly Tunnels , wind turbines Yes , generally a blot on he landscape particularly when they don't go round !!!
GWRS. the tunnel with the netting up to 1m high allows air flow and, as such, never gets as hot as the tunnel which is all plastic.
This it when we finished it last November.
the new tunnel is the same width, but one bay shorter.
Hi GWRS, I've had greenhouses for many years but erected a 4x2m poly tunnel in addition in early spring this year (never enough space in my GH) so haven't gone through a full season yet. However, I've used it to grow pretty much the same things and had successful crops of cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet peppers and chilies. Half of it was also used for sweet potatoes but I can't report on those as I haven't harvested them yet (they're still growing.) My observations are that it harder to ventilate (eg no automatic roof vents) and there is appreciably less light available than under glass. Mine is held down very securely indeed and I think that is very important judging by the experiences of others I have read about. All in all I am very happy with it.
Bobthegardener , interesting to hear how you got on with your sweet potatoes ?
I assume you plant direct into the ground ?
poly tunnel dose sound a very good idea
thanks to all for the info
