Problem with Bergenia

Please could someone advise me as to why my Bergenias which normally have flowered on a stem, this year the flower buds are flowering in the base without a stem. Unless you stand over them you don't see the flowers, which admittedly are crunched up. I can't find a reason why, anyone know?

I think they will grow up, its been quite cold, wait a bit and see.
I think you're right Lyn, they always start down there
In the sticks near Peterborough
Hmmmph! Mine have had their chance, three years in the ground and not a single flower!!! Out they will come and something prettier will go in.
