Reply to Eleanor: 'Victoria' plums should be ripe and ready to eat during August. My 'Victoria' plums aren't quite ready yet, but I'll keep checking over the coming weeks to pick them at their prime. Remember that birds love them, too, and wasps may be around, so take great care when picking to ensure wasps aren't eating fruits.

I have just planted a young Stella cherry tree and unfortunately I have torn off one of the branches. The bark is missing on a section of the trunk about 10 cm long. What can I do to repair the damage, so that disease does not enter my new fruit tree? I did think about putting a sticky plaster over the wound!

I've had a large crop of plums but very disappointed that they have all split, if anyone can tell me why I would really appreciate it.
