Pansy seeds

I have just collected some fat big faced pansy seeds,
What i don't understand is in the gardens books, although they advocate collecting free seed, They do say without any explanation that if you collect and sow the seed, the chances are the plant flowers will be a lot smaller???? ugh!
If this is the case, how do the big seed firms manage to sell seed that will produce good flowers.... any thoughts anybody!

hybridisation Peter, crossing and recrossing the biggest. once that stops threy gradually seed back to the original species, smaller.
Only species plants seed as the parents, hybrids and cultivars might sometimes if you're lucky.
