I'm turfing my garden and I was wondering what I need underneath the turf. At the moment the garden is paved so underneath the paving stones there is thin layer of sand and then soil.

Do I need to mix the sand in with the soil, remove it completely or leave it where it is?

I then plan to add topsoil before laying the turf. How deep should my topsoil be? Do I need to treat the topsoil with any nutrients or anything?

Should my soil (both the current soil and the new topsoil) be flattened down before laying the turf or should it be loose?

Many thanks for your advice
