Many gardens have shady areas, where sun-loving plants simply won’t thrive. The good news is that there are plenty of plants that can tolerate or even prefer a shaded or partially shaded position, including many woodland plants.
The native Galanthus nivalis snowdrops signal winter’s end with an understated elegance. They love to shelter in dappled shade at the base of trees and shrubs, but are equally at home in an alpine garden or naturalised in grass.
Loved for their winter beauty, hellebores will survive the coldest weather, poking their heads up above the snow. These blousy, cup-shaped double blooms appear above glossy evergreen foliage from January through to May, giving colour to your garden when little else is flowering.
