August is a great time to sow salad leaves for autumn harvests – they're one of the easiest veg to grow and are ideal in containers. Monty Don shows you how to grow oak-leaved or 'Salad Bowl' lettuces, explaining how many seeds to sow and what compost to use. You'll be able to harvest the leaves in just a couple of months, making repeated pickings well into autumn from this cut-and-come-again salad crop.
