The cabbage head agave, Agave parrasana, is a rare and unusual agave bearing a compact rosette of tightly held, waxy, overlapping leaves, resembling a cabbage. A highly ornamental variety, its leaves are blue-green with red, hook-like teeth along the margins. Yellow flowers, up to 6m high, grow from red buds on mature plants. It’s perfect for growing in a container in a conservatory or greenhouse, or may even be planted outdoors on a sunny patio or gravel garden, in summer.

For best results grow Agave parrasana in well-drained soil in a sheltered spot in full sun. Water sparingly in summer and reduce watering in winter. Protect from frost.
