Aristolochia sempervirens is a fantastic evergreen woody climber with glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Throughout spring and early summer its curved, tubular, burgundy flowers use their hairy yellow throat to catch and trap insects temporarily to aid pollination. Half hardy, it’s a great talking point and is a good choice for growing up a sheltered trellis or wall. It may also be used as groundcover.
Grow Aristolochia sempervirens in a sheltered site in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Take semi-ripe cuttings or propagate from seed in summer to insure against winter losses. Cut back in spring if necessary.
