Witch hazels are grown for their attractive flowers, which are produced in late winter and early spring, when most other plants are dormant. They do best in a slightly acidic soil but can cope with neutral soil, as long as it is enriched with organic matter and is well drained.
Hamamelis x intermedia hybrids are crosses between Japanese with hazel (Hamamelis japonica) and Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis).
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Strawberries and Cream' bears beautifully contrasting flowers, with yellow tips which deepen to a pinky-red towards the base. For best results grow Hamamelis x intermedia 'Strawberries and Cream' in fertile, moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil, in sun or partial shade. Remove crossing or diseased branches in early spring, and apply a mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.
