Hostas are popular, shade-loving plants, grown mainly for their beautiful foliage, although most varieties also have pretty, tubular flowers. Hosta leaves come in a wide range of shapes, colours, sizes, and textures, so there's a huge choice to suit you and your garden.

Hosta undulata var. undulata has pretty, variegated leaves with a narrow, cream-coloured centre and a broad green margin.

For best results, grow in part shade in rich, moist soil and add plenty of organic matter to the soil before planting. Mulch annually with well-rotted compost or horse manure. Take precautions against slugs and snails, such as regular evening patrols, wildlife-friendly slug pellets and beer traps.
