Herbaceous peonies are a well-deserved, popular choice for providing colour and drama to ornamental borders in late spring and early summer. They boast large, often double flowers in whites, pinks and reds, and return year after year.

Unlike tree peonies, herbaceous peonies die back to ground level in winter. They thrive in a well-drained, neutral soil, in full sun.

Paeonia lactiflora 'Nippon Beauty’ is a late-flowering peony, bearing sumptuous deep red, semi-double flowers in contrast with dark green leaves. The central ball of fringed petals is flushed with cream. It makes an excellent cut flower.
