Rhododendrons make up an incredibly diverse group of plants, originating from many parts of the Northern hemisphere with a large concentration in China and the Himalayas. These plants vary from tiny ground covering plants to species growing as understory plants in forests. Most flower in early spring, although some bear flowers for a brief period in autumn.
The Rhododendron 'Dufthecke' series includes white-, lilac- and yellow-flowered varieties, all of which are compact, with large scented flowers in April and May. The 'Dufthecke' cultivars are part of a group of rhododendrons grown on 'Inkarho' rootstock, meaning they can be grown in neutral pH soils. For best results, grow Rhododendron 'Dufthecke' in dappled to partial shade in moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Plants need minimal pruning and can be propagated by layering.
