Rhododendron yakushimanum is one of a group of evergreen hybrid rhododendrons, which have a compact growth habit but large, spring blooms and attractive foliage. It’s ideal for cultivating in small gardens and is well-suited to growing in containers.

Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' is a particularly lovely variety, bearing pink buds, which open to white bell-shaped flowers in late spring. Young leaves have a silvery hue, which matures to dark green with a covering of fine, felty hairs. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden merit (AGM).

Grow Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' in humus-rich, moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil (or peat-free ericaceous compost). Rhododendrons are shallow-rooted so take care not to plant too deeply. Protect from harsh winter winds and mulch annually with a generous layer of leaf mould. There should be little or no need to prune.
