Great burnet, Sanguisorba officinalis, is a hardy, herbaceous perennial with a large native range, spanning much of the northern hemisphere, including the United Kingdom. The flowers are an oval, pom-pom shape and are extremely attractive to bees. In the wild they can be found growing in damp grasslands and meadows, and along the edges of lakes and rivers. The foliage is said to have a cucumber scent.
Sanguisorba officinalis 'Red Thunder' bears abundant, deep burgundy flowers from July to September on tall, branching stems. Further flowers can be encouraged by deadheading spent blooms. It's perfect for growing in a moist spot as part of a mixed herbaceous border.
For best results, grow Sanguisorba officinalis 'Red Thunder' in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
