Thatching reed, Thamnochortus insignis, is a South African restio forming upright clumps of variegated, reed-like foliage, which beautifully sets off the chocolate-coloured flowers. It’s perfect for growing in a mixed border or large pot.

Grow Thamnochortus insignis in well-drained soil in full sun. Not fully hardy, you may need to offer protection in winter. There’s usually no need to prune, simply remove old stems as and when they look tatty. Divide in spring.
