Species tulips often have more natural-looking blooms than their hybrid relatives. Tulipa sylvestris is a small, delicate tulip. It works well naturalised in shorter grass and releases a soft, citrusy fragrance.

For best results grow Tulipa sylvestris in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. After flowering, don't cut back the foliage, but leave it to die down naturally, as damaging it can prevent flowering the following year.
