Mexican blue yucca, Yucca rigida, is a medium-sized, trunk-forming yucca native to northern Mexico. It’s perfect for adding a touch of drama to the garden and does well in exotic and tropical planting schemes. It has blue-green, spear-shaped, finely toothed leaves that point upwards – a characteristic of yucca growth. These are complemented by clusters of pure white flowers in late-spring. It may be confused with Yucca rostrata, but its leaves are wider and firmer.

Grow Yucca rigida in very free-draining soil in a sunny, sheltered spot. Although hardier than most yuccas, it may need protection in winter, particularly from wet conditions. Alternatively, grow in a pot, which you can move indoors in autumn.
