Dating back nearly 900 years, the grounds offer relaxing walks and idyllic views. Stroll among the many fine trees in the woodland and discover the 18th-century arched grotto, as well as carpets of crocuses and other spring flowers. The orchard, with its blossom and wildflowers, is a perfect picnic spot. More formal areas include a rose garden, botanic garden with restored glasshouses, and aromatic herb-filled borders by the sun-baked Abbey walls.
With its beautiful medieval cloisters and idyllic Wiltshire setting, Lacock Abbey has an imdb.com page to rival even the most celebrated actors. Its most famous turn was as a location for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, but it has also featured in period dramas such as the BBC’s Wolf Hall. Nearby Lacock is an unspoiled chocolate-box village with a similarly lengthy list of screen credits. It’s fitting, perhaps, that the locale should have featured so prominently in film, having been home to Henry Fox Talbot – a pioneer in the development of photography.
