How to get your lawn summer-ready this spring
Now’s the time to start prepping your lawn for the season ahead. Webb is here to help with some easy advice – and a handy 10% discount
At last, we’re welcoming spring. After what seems like endless months of puddles, worm casts and mud, your grass is now beginning to awaken – becoming brighter, greener and stronger as the days grow longer – making it the perfect time to start preparing for the warmer months.
And Webb knows all about what it takes to achieve a pristine lawn. After all, it’s made an art of crafting lawnmowers and other garden machines, and works closely with gardening experts such as Adam Woolcott. Read on to discover Adam’s top tips for getting your grass ready for the summer.
1. Mow your lawn
Now is a great time to begin cutting your lawn regularly, but you’ll need to be guided by the weather and ground conditions. For instance, if it’s still very cold with frost or the ground is wet, then hold back a while longer until conditions improve.
2. Cut little and often
Your lawn will be much happier being cut little and often. In fact, going in with a low cut at the beginning of the season can be detrimental to your lawn, causing it to discolour or scorch in the hot sun.
If your grass is very tall at the start of the year, set your lawnmower on the highest setting for the first cut. Then, drop the height gradually each time you mow until you achieve the height you want. For an ornamental lawn, the grass can be kept quite short, but for an area that’s likely to receive some rough and tumble, it’s best to leave it taller. This also applies during hot and dry periods.
3. Try the stripe effect
Larger lawns tend to lend themselves to being striped, but this effect can still be achieved on smaller lawns, too. The secret? Use a mower with a rear roller! By cutting up and down from the point you view your lawn, slightly overlapping the cut each time, you’ll achieve the best results.
Webb offers a wide range of rear roller lawnmowers including the WERR17SP Supreme petrol rear lawnmower and the WERR17LISPX2 cordless self-propelled rear roller rotary lawnmower. There’s also the 43cm (17”) cordless self-propelled rear roller rotary lawnmower with two batteries and a charger, or the Supreme electric rear roller, which is new for 2024. These are all fantastic machines that will easily and effectively give your lawn a professional striped finish.
4. Ensure you have the right lawnmower
When buying a new lawnmower, there are three main considerations to bear in mind: the size of your lawn; what sort of finish you want (for example, a very fine cut for an ornamental lawn); and lastly, how you want it to be powered.
Whether you’re looking for an electric, petrol or even a battery-operated lawnmower, Webb has a comprehensive selection of machines to choose from. Intuitively and thoughtfully designed, every model is easy to use for both beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.
But which one is right for you?
Here are some of the pros and cons you might want to consider…
Battery
Introducing the new Webb Eco cordless battery range. These lawnmowers offer the might of petrol-powered equipment minus the disruptive noise, cumbersome maintenance and harmful emissions. All the tools are powered by an interchangeable 20v battery, so you’ll be free to work without the hassle of tangled cords or the need to stay within reach of a power source.
Electric
Electric lawnmowers typically weigh much less than their bulkier petrol-powered counterparts. This lighter weight also makes them easier to manoeuvre in tight corners, tricky spots and uphill terrain. And as they need minimal runtime, they’re especially convenient for small gardens.
Petrol
One clear advantage of petrol mowers is their impressive power. They’re known for their robustness, making them ideal for tackling medium to large lawns. Compared to corded or battery-powered models, petrol mowers significantly streamline the lawn-cutting process, making it faster and easier for you.
