Ampelopsis brevipedunculata 'Elegans' is a modest growing climber that deserves to be much better known. It bears striking pink, cream and green variegated leaves which resemble those of a small hop or vine, and contrast well with the pink tendrils by which the plant attaches itself to a trellis or a similar support. After a hot summer, small gem-like turquoise fruits appear.

Grow Ampelopsis brevipedunculata 'Elegans' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, trained on a trellis or over an arch with one or two hybrid clematis. Hardy and frost tender, this plant tolerates most soils, even naturally poor soil, but must be kept moist. It can grow in semi-shade or no-shade areas. Since the stems die down to ground level each winter, Ampelopsis brevipedunculata 'Elegans' stays compact without the need for pruning. However, it's a good idea to cut old stems back to the ground in late autumn when they die back naturally.
