Schefflera brevipedicellata is a hardy evergreen shrub or small tree, related to the popular umbrella plant, Schefflera arboricola. It's native to the lush mountainsides of southern China and northern Vietnam. It makes a gorgeous addition to an exotic garden.

The papery leaves are deep green, and are complemented by plum-coloured stems and leaf stalks. From late summer and into autumn, cream flowers are produced, similar to those of fatsia. The flowers are then followed by clusters of black berries.

For best results, grow Schefflera brevipedicellata in full sun or partial shade, in moist, well-drained soil that has has been improved with organic matter. A sheltered spot is best, and young plants will need some extra protection from frosts.
