Achilleas are short-lived perennials with flat, plate-like umbels which stand tall above fern-like foliage. Achillea ‘Petra’ is a compact variety, bearing dark red umbels that don’t fade as the season progresses, in contrast with silvery green fern-like foliage. Perfect for a sunny spot in an informal, mixed herbaceous border, it works well among other brightly coloured blooms. It makes a fantastic cut flower.

Grow Achillea ‘Petra’ in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering and either cut back blooms in autumn or leave the seedbeds in situ, for the birds. Lift and divide congested clumps every three years, in autumn or spring.
