The purple chokeberry, Aronia x prunifolia, bears fruit with up to three times as many antioxidants as blueberries. An ornamental shrub, it has waxy green leaves and pretty white flowers with dark red stamens, which develop into dark purple-red berries in autumn. The berries have a tart flavour when eaten raw, but are delicious when cooked and used in jams and summer puddings.

For best results grow Aronia x prunifolia in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
