Bearing huge, pincushion flowers in a dusky pink over mid-green foliage, Astrantia maxima is a fantastic choice for a mixed herbaceous border. Like all masterworts, it’s popular with bees and other pollinators, and makes an excellent cut flower, although it blooms slightly later than other species. The Royal Horticultural Society has awarded it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.

Grow Astrantia maxima in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Cut back spent flowers in autumn and divide congested clumps in spring.
