Bearded irises are so-named after the 'beards' on each of the falls (lower petals) of the flowers. Tall bearded irises grow to a height of around 70cm or more, and flower in late-spring and early summer.
Iris 'Dusky Challenger' grows to a height of 120cm. Huge, shimmering purple flowers with blue-black beards appear on strong stems in early summer. Flowers have a strong, chocolate scent. 'Dusky Challenger' is perfect for growing in a mixed herbaceous border or gravel garden, and makes an excellent cut flower.
For best results grow Iris 'Dusky Challenger' in well-drained soil in full sun, and mulch with well-rotted manure or garden compost annually.
