Often known as false Solomon’s seal, plants in the Maianthemum genus are mat-forming rhizomatous perennials, bearing erect or arching stems of alternate leaves. Flowers are small and star-shaped, and are followed by pretty red berries.

Maianthemum japonicum bears arching stems of yellow-green leaves and pretty white flowers, which are followed by fleshy red-purple fruit. It’s perfect for a shady corner or woodland border, where it will form an attractive mat of ground cover.

Grow Maianthemum japonicum in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade.
