Mirtre flower, Mitraria coccinea, is an exotic spreading perennial native to Chile. It can be grown as a scrambling vine or trained to grow as a climber, usually in a conservatory but it may also be grown in very sheltered gardens. It bears large, orange-scarlet, tubular flowers in summer, which contrast beautifully with its dark green leaves. Eventually it can grow into a small shrub.

Grow Mitraria coccinea in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered spot or under glass. Protect from frost in winter and feed regularly during the flowering season, especially if growing in a container.
