Not trees, but shrubs, tree peonies have flamboyant, papery blooms and interesting foliage. But they are far from delicate – planted in the right spot they can last for many years.

There are many cultivars to choose from, with single and double flowers, in a range of colours. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.

A Japanese hybrid, Paeonia ‘Golden Thunder’ has gorgeous apricot flowers with a pink flush on each petal, and a central cluster of orange-yellow stamens. Foliage is a rich, fresh green. The flowers of ‘Golden Thunder’ are smaller than many of the Japanese hybrids, but there are more of them and they show excellent weather resistance.
