Tree peonies – actually shrubs – have flamboyant, papery blooms and interesting foliage. Although very elegant in appearance, they’re actually rather robust if planted in the right spot, where they can last for many years.
There are many tree peony cultivars to choose from, with single and double flowers, in a range of colours. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
Paeonia ‘Shimane Sedai’ has bright rose pink blooms which are semi-double on young plants but become progressively more double as the plants age. For best results, grow ‘Shimane Sedai’ in rich, well-prepared soil in full sun. Protect from wind and prune in late winter when plants are still dormant.
