The flame or glory lily, Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana', is a deciduous climber, bearing startling bright red flowers with recurved petals and protruding stamens, and flashy yellow margins. It's the perfect choice for an exotic planting scheme, especially when allowed to climb through other plants. It's also a popular conservatory plant.
In early spring plant the finger-like tubers 8cm deep in a pot, and maintain a temperature of 16oC. Provide support for the stems to climb up, be it a trellis or other shrubs. Water Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana' well and feed every fortnight in summer, but keep dry in winter.
