Rhamnus alaternus, or Italian buckthorn, is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean scrublands.
Rhamnus alaternus 'Argenteovariegata' is a variegated cultivar with silver-green leaves edged with cream. In late spring and early summer, small, fragrant, golden flowers are produced followed by glossy red berries in autumn. Rhamnus alaternus 'Argenteovariegata' isn't reliably hardy so should not be planted in very cold, exposed locations. It makes a good hedging plant and also looks good as part of a coastal border.
For best results, grow Rhamnus alaternus 'Argenteovariegata' in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. It holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
