Salvia argentea, or silver sage, is an eye-catching herbaceous perennial native to southern Europe.

It has large, ruffled-looking leaves covered in a fine layer of silver hairs, giving them a soft downy appearance. In late summer the rosette is topped by tall stems bearing white, hooded flowers. It looks fantastic in a sunny spot, such as a free-draining gravel garden.

For best results, grow Salvia argentea in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. The flowers can be cut back before they set seed to prolong the life of the plant. Salvia argentea has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
