- Botanical name: Solanum tuberosum 'Foremost'
- Common name: Potato
- Family: Solanaceae
- Plant Type: Vegetable
Green
- Key features:
- Prefers rich soil
First early potato varieties are the most popular for garden cultivation, occupying the ground for less time than other kinds and producing fairly heavy yields from most kinds of soil. Well-dug soil with plenty of compost or rotted manure worked in will improve yields considerably, as will a thorough soak two weeks before lifting. First earlies can be grown under polythene or fleece for extra early crops, and may also be grown in large pots both early in the year and in late summer for Christmas harvest.
Solanum tuberosum ‘Foremost’ produces white-fleshed, waxy tubers with a good flavour. It’s ideal for eating straight out of the ground in salads or as a new potato. Solanum tuberosum ‘Foremost’ also shows good resistance to slugs.
