What is the Wormcity wormery like and where can I put it?
The Wormcity is a stacking model that can be made with two, three or four trays depending on the amount of waste you need to compost. It can be placed inside or outdoors, on a hard surface or soil. The stacking trays do let in some rain, so it’s best given some shelter from the rain to avoid the compost becoming over-wet. As with all wormeries, it should be placed out of direct sun as the worms will die if it gets too hot.
What’s the Wormcity wormery like to use?
The Wormcity is easy to assemble and doesn’t require tools and comes with a combination of clear pictorial and written instructions that are simple to follow. The lid has a lift-up handle which makes it easy to take off to add waste and the deep, square trays have grips that are easy to handle when you're removing them to harvest compost from the bottom tray. The sturdy base unit also contains the sump that holds the liquid produced by the worms and the interior is ‘stepped’ so any worms that fall through can avoid drowning. Liquid is drained from the sump via a chunky, easy to use tap. The only, and very minor, drawback that we encountered was that being low to the ground the base allowed some slugs to enter the wormery.
Who is the Wormcity wormery most useful for?
With a larger than average capacity of 25 litres per tray, a Wormcity made up of 2 trays would suit smaller households of 1-2 people, while 3-4 trays would be ideal for a larger household. The manufacturer recommends a minimum of 3 trays to give the worms plenty of time to fully process waste.
Is the Wormcity wormery value for money and is it built to last?
With its large capacity and a starter kit that includes 500 grammes of worms plus worm food and bedding, the Wormcity produces a large amount of compost and gives excellent value for money. It also comes with a 5-year warranty. A third tray is well worth purchasing and this only costs an additional £7 when bought at the same time. The wormery is sturdily constructed and scores high on eco-credentials too, made from 100% recycled plastic in the UK.
